Fourth grade celebrated the Holidays by decorating gingerbread houses.  The 100% edible houses were pre-constructed for the students using gingerbread and held together with melted sugar.  Students used icing to adorn the houses with a variety of their favorite candy.  A drawing was held for each group to see who took home the house to devour over the winter break.

Mrs. Ploss led the students of Mariaville in a wonderful 3 part holiday concert.  The night began with music by the 5th grade band.  The first year music students played many holiday favorites, including: Hot Cross Buns, Pierrot’s Door, Old Moldy Buns (Flute), Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star (Trumpet), Mary Had a Little Lamb, Little Tom Tinker, Mary Had a Smelly Goat (Percussion), Lightly Row (Clarinet), Happy Birthday (Rachel Houck), Jingle Bells.

The next act included grades K-3 in their production of “Around the World at Christmas Time”.  The students sported wonderful costumes and sang songs including: Deck the Halls, Christmas Lullaby, The Piñata Song, O Hanukkah, Up on the Housetop / Jolly Old St. Nicholas and We Wish You a Merry Christmas.

The 4th and 5th grade classes closed with “A Martian Christmas”, written by Theresa Jennings.  This holiday arrangement taught the meaning of Christmas to our Martian Friends.  The cast of characters sang songs including: Christmas at our School, A Reason for the Season, Follow Me, The Right Thing to Do and Celebrate out of This World.

The concert was a success and even included solos by several of the students.  Everyone did a fabulous job and received a well deserved round of applause!

A DVD copy of this event is available.  The cost of the DVD is $10 payable to the Mariaville PTO.

Students of Mariaville put on their disguises as they strut around the bus circle.  Some students went for the scary look; others took a chapter from a fairy tale.  Some students even played the part of a future profession.  A fun time was had by all.

The goal of field day is to provide an end of the year event showcasing many of the different activities taught during our classes as well as some activities just for fun.  The field is set up like a carnival, with stations all over the playground. Students rotate through stations. Teachers bring their students to the area directed and release them. When their time is up, they move to the next station.  This year we had the fortune of having a dunking tank at the event; however, due to a delivery issue, the tank was not ready until the end of the day.  So instead of the tank being a normal station the students rotated through, everyone lined up at the end of the day an tried their best to dunk Mr. Hunt and Mr. Woodrow.

During the 5th grade trip to the Boston Science Museum, students received a biology lesson on squid anatomy.  Students paired up into groups of 3 or 4 and each took turns dissecting a squid.  The lesson was conducted by museum staff in one of the on-hands group buildings outside of the main museum complex.  Even students originally “grossed out” by the thought of opening up the squid were soon participating in the lesson.  Maybe there is a future biologist in the class?

Maraiville Fourth and Fifth grades took to their Bikes and toured the bike path along lock 7 in Niskayuna.  Students even saw a boat passing through lock 7 and were fortunate to see several turtles laying eggs along the bike path.  At the end of the ride, students, teachers and parents broke for a picnic lunch and enjoy the summer day.
